> Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), founded in 1957 by Ken Olson and Harlan Anderson, began by building circuit modules and later released its first computer, the PDP-1, in 1961. DEC became known for its minicomputers, notably the PDP-8, and expanded into scientific computing with 36-bit machines and the successful PDP-10 timesharing computer. In 1976, they introduced the high-end VAX series, extending the PDP-11 architecture. The company faced financial difficulties in the 1990s and was acquired by Compaq in 1998, which was subsequently acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2002.
