The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is the primary federal entity responsible for conducting and funding scientific research into the aging process, age-related diseases, and the special health needs of older Americans. Established in 1974, the NIA also serves as the lead agency for federal research on Alzheimer’s disease.
