    Optimly AI Recommendation Archetypes

What Kind of AI Brand Are You?

AI can know your brand without choosing it. Find out how AI understands and recommends your company.

These are observed states, not a maturity ladder. A brand can move between them as AI models, available evidence, query sets, and its own positioning change.

    Core thesis

Being visible to AI isn't the same as being recommended by AI.

Optimly uses observed AI Brand Index data to classify brands into four AI Recommendation Archetypes based on whether AI systems know the brand, understand it accurately, and recommend it in relevant buying contexts.

The four Optimly AI Recommendation Archetypes are Phantom, Misunderstood, Known Not Chosen, and Recommended.

Each archetype is determined from deterministic Index measurements — not from an AI model's judgment about a brand profile. Once the archetype is assigned, Optimly's analysis layer interprets why a brand may be in that state.

    The four archetypes

    Where does your brand sit?

    Phantom

    AI doesn't reliably know you

A Phantom brand has insufficient observed presence in relevant AI answers for Optimly to establish consistent brand understanding or recommendation behavior.

The company may exist — and may even rank well in traditional search — but AI systems don't reliably surface it in the contexts Optimly measures.

    Misunderstood

    AI gets you wrong

A Misunderstood brand appears in AI answers, but its observed category, capabilities, audience, positioning, or other material attributes diverge from its declared or published representation.

For brands that haven't claimed their Optimly profile, Optimly compares observed AI perception with available public brand information rather than assuming knowledge of internal strategy.

    Core problem

    Known, Not Chosen

AI understands you but doesn't choose you

A Known, Not Chosen brand is sufficiently understood by AI systems but has weak or absent observed recommendation presence for relevant buyer queries.

AI visibility isn't this brand's primary problem. AI preference is.

This state does not automatically mean a company's positioning is weak. There are several possible explanations:

    Differentiation

AI doesn't perceive a sufficiently meaningful reason to choose the brand over alternatives.

    Representation

The differentiation exists strategically but isn't represented consistently enough for AI to understand it.

    Authority

AI understands the differentiation but doesn't encounter sufficient independent evidence to substantiate it.

    Retrieval

Supporting evidence exists but isn't consistently available in the answer context.

Known, Not Chosen is a diagnosis of observed AI behavior, not a judgment about the quality of a company's strategy.

    The Optimly AI Recommendation Framework

What makes AI recommend a brand?

AI recommendation is not a single gate. It follows five observable stages — and a gap at any stage can prevent recommendation even when earlier stages are strong.

    01

    Understand

    Are you relevant?

Can AI correctly understand what you are, who you're for, and what problems you solve?

    02

    Distinguish

    Why choose you?

Can AI identify a meaningful reason you're particularly appropriate relative to alternatives?

    03

    Trust

    Can that reason be substantiated?

Is the position supported by sufficient available evidence, including independent sources where relevant?

    04

    Retrieve

    Can AI establish it?

Can the relevant evidence actually be accessed and used when generating an answer?

    05

    Recommend

    Does AI choose you?

Does the brand appear in observed recommendations for relevant buyer contexts?

Visibility asks: "Does AI know you?"

Recommendation asks: "Does AI know why to choose you?"

    How archetypes are determined

    Data, not opinion

Archetypes are assigned from deterministic AI Brand Index measurements — not from an AI's judgment about a brand profile. Once the archetype is determined, Optimly's analysis layer interprets why a brand may be in that state.

Index measurements contributing to each stage include: observed AI mention frequency, category alignment, capability and audience representation accuracy, sentiment consistency, and recommendation presence across a defined buyer-query sample.

    01

Does Optimly observe sufficient AI presence?

    No → PHANTOMYes → Continue
    02

Does observed representation materially align with declared or publicly available brand information?

    No → MISUNDERSTOODYes → Continue
    03

Does Optimly observe relevant recommendation presence for buyer queries?

No → KNOWN, NOT CHOSENYes → RECOMMENDED

    What a result looks like

After you look up your brand

Every public brand profile at optimly.ai/brand/[brand-name] carries a server-rendered archetype, definition, evidence summary, measurement date, sample scope, and a link to this methodology.

    Unwrap — AI Recommendation Archetype

    Known, Not Chosen

AI appears to understand what Unwrap does, but that understanding isn't consistently translating into observed recommendation presence.

    AI presenceEstablished
    RepresentationGenerally understood
Recommendation presenceWeak / not observed in measured sample
    AuthorityEmerging

    Why isn't AI choosing Unwrap?

The archetype tells us what is happening, not necessarily why. Optimly investigates across four dimensions: Positioning, Representation, Authority, and Retrieval.

    Frequently asked questions

    Common questions about AI recommendation

    What are AI Recommendation Archetypes?

AI Recommendation Archetypes are four observed states — Phantom, Misunderstood, Known Not Chosen, and Recommended — that describe how AI systems currently understand and recommend a brand. Optimly determines a brand's archetype from AI Brand Index measurement data, not from self-reported information.

What makes AI recommend a brand?

Based on Optimly's observed data, AI recommendation follows five stages: understanding what a brand is, distinguishing why it's a better choice than alternatives, finding sufficient evidence to trust that distinction, being able to retrieve that evidence when answering a query, and recommending the brand in relevant buyer contexts. A gap at any stage can prevent recommendation even when earlier stages are strong.

Why does ChatGPT know my company but not recommend it?

Awareness and recommendation are different outcomes. AI systems can correctly identify a company and summarize its positioning accurately, without consistently choosing it when a buyer asks for a recommendation. This is the Known, Not Chosen state. The cause may be differentiation, representation, authority, or retrieval — and each has a different fix.

What does Known, Not Chosen mean?

Known, Not Chosen means Optimly observes that AI systems understand a brand but don't consistently recommend it in relevant buyer queries. It is a classification of observed AI behavior, not a judgment about the company's quality or strategy.

What is the difference between AI visibility and AI recommendation?

Visibility means AI knows a brand exists and can describe it. Recommendation means AI actively selects the brand when a buyer asks which company to use. Getting mentioned is visibility. Getting chosen is the outcome.

Does Known, Not Chosen mean my positioning is bad?

Not necessarily. A company can have a strong, differentiated position that AI simply doesn't encounter often enough to substantiate, or doesn't have access to when generating answers. The archetype names the problem; the diagnosis determines the cause.

How does brand positioning affect AI recommendations?

AI recommendation requires that a brand's differentiation is both understood and substantiated. If positioning is clear internally but not consistently represented in the sources AI draws on, AI can't use it. If it's represented but not corroborated by independent evidence, AI may understand it but not trust it enough to recommend it.

Why does authority matter for AI recommendations?

AI systems weigh corroboration. A brand that claims a position not reflected in independent coverage, case studies, or third-party references has lower effective authority — even if the claim is accurate. Authority is what lets AI recommend with confidence rather than hedge.

How does Optimly determine an AI Recommendation Archetype?

Archetypes are assigned through a deterministic sequence of AI Brand Index measurements: observed presence, representation accuracy, and recommendation presence across a defined buyer-query sample. No single AI model decides the archetype. The classification comes from measurement; interpretation of why a brand is in that state comes from analysis.

Can my AI Recommendation Archetype change?

Yes. Archetypes reflect observed AI behavior at a point in time. As AI models update, available evidence changes, or a brand changes its positioning and representation, the archetype can shift in either direction. Optimly tracks archetype changes over time.

Can Optimly guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my company?

No. Optimly measures and influences the signals that contribute to AI recommendation. It cannot control the proprietary ranking and generation systems of individual AI providers, and no external service can. What Optimly can do is identify precisely where the gap is and what evidence-based actions are most likely to close it.

    Methodology and claims

What we observe and what we don't

The Optimly AI Recommendation Framework is a diagnostic model developed from observed AI representation, retrieval, and recommendation behavior in the AI Brand Index. It does not describe the proprietary internal ranking systems of individual AI providers.

Terms used on this page have specific meanings:

    Observed retrievalBuyer demand

Where Optimly reports association between signals and outcomes, the relationship is observational unless stated otherwise. Causal claims are not made from correlational data.
